Braun: Designed to Keep is a book worth holding onto

The speakers offer exceptional sound reproduction and contemporary functionality packaged within a heritage-style casing. Here we reflect on some of the iconic design brand's most important innovations and explore how each fulfils Braun's three core principles that were explored in the masterclass series. As part of our collaboration with Braun to mark the brand's centenary, we look back at eight influential Braun products that changed the home electronics landscape. The company was formerly a manufacturer of food processors, radios, slide projectors, Super 8 film cameras and accessories, and high-fidelity sound systems. On account of its transparent Perspex lid, this famous Braun audio device was nicknamed ‘Snow White’s Coffin’. Rams joined Braun as an interior designer in 1955, having trained in architecture and interior design.

Another icon of modern design, but less well known, is the LE1 electrostatic loudspeaker unit (for which technological aspects were licensed from QUAD). Today, Braun focuses on its core categories (shaving and grooming, beauty, and hair care). Household small appliances, health, and wellness categories, as well as clocks and watches, are now run by other companies (De'Longhi, Zeon, Kaz) under license. In 1921, Max Braun [de] (1890–1951), a mechanical engineer, established a small engineering shop in Frankfurt, Germany.[1] In 1923, he began producing components for radio sets.

Ten Principles of Good design

To ensure the Braun design philosophy proved itself in the market Erwin Braun sought advice from experts in the field of architecture and design, in particular with the “Hochschule fuer Gestaltung (HfG)” or Ulm School of Design. This black and silver shaver set a precedent with advanced trimming in a clean design. The classic color scheme in this design was quite a rarity at the time and inspired the color schemes for radios, music players, and cameras for decades to come. Although hi-fi sound equipment was already well established in the USA and UK during the 1940s, Braun’s name within that field was largely made in the 1950s. Yes, the German imprint was late to the party, but with a refreshing, modular approach and superior all-around design, it didn’t take long for Braun to become the household name within audio tech. Steel casings in white or dark grey, a steel cover panel, and light and dark grey controls set the stage for a green power switch.

Electric Shavers

When he returned to the school in Wiesbaden he became interested in architecture, influenced by professors and lecturers such as Dr. Söder, Hugo Kϋckelhaus and Professor Haffenrichter. Having graduated from the course with distinctions, in 1953 he joined Otto Apel’s architects’ office in Frankfurt. Soon afterwards, in the summer of 1955, Rams left the company for a position as architect and interior designer at Braun. As head of design at Braun, the German consumer electronics manufacturer, Dieter Rams (1932-) emerged as one of the most influential industrial designers of the late 20th century by defining an elegant, legible, yet rigorous visual language for its products.

I find it so interesting looking at the idea of a portable record player and how Braun ended up here. Its minimal, streamlined design worked with just a single thumb-operated button. The Nostradamus of design, if you will, Rams was predicting the future with the T 3, and if you've ever used an iPod, you will know why. As a portable radio, the T 1000 needed to be small, but the technology needed to afford connection to all wavelengths presented a dilemma. Rams’ simple interface meant that the user could understand how to use the radio straight away and operate it with confidence.

While both innovations had an aesthetic value, more importantly, they were geared towards clarifying operation for the user. Less, but better — because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. A touring global exhibition, called Less Is More, and the self-confessed ‘homage’ of Apple's Jony Ive across the iMac, iPod and iPhone give Rams’ functional and aesthetic principals worldwide impact.

Dieter Rams. Modular World

By 1928, the growing company moved to new premises on Idsteiner Strasse. This electric juicer, also known as the citromatic, was a dependable and incredibly easy-to-clean staple of kitchens across the world for decades. It took over two decades before Braun decided an update to the original design was due. This toaster’s sleek, reduced design so inspired renowned artist Richard Hamilton that he based one of his works (aptly titled ‘Toaster’) on it. The 50's established the milkshake as a western staple, enabled in part by the Multimix, the state-of-the-art blender with a detachable mixing glass container. Detailed research into the actual use and habits, as well as the individual’s wants and needs are crucial if we are to be truly innovative. And we use many of the very latest research methods to make our new products as efficient as possible. By the 1970s, Braun discontinued its film slide projectors and hi-fi products to focus on home consumer appliances, including shavers, razors, coffee makers, clocks, and radios. In 1929, eight years after he started his shop, Max Braun began to manufacture entire radio sets, and his company eventually became one of Germany's leading radio manufacturers. This development continued with the launch of one of the first combined radio and record players, called radiograms, in 1932. Rams’ Early Days at BraunWhen he arrived at Braun, Rams applied his architectural skills to the design of exhibition sets and offices, but became increasingly interested in products.

The episodes, which are available to watch on Dezeen and Braun's website, also explore how we can integrate good design into our day-to-day lives. / Sign up for Verge Deals to get deals on products we've tested sent to your inbox weekly. The vast majority of the book deals with the Braun we celebrate, not tolerate, with plenty of history to reference anytime you want to better understand how the company’s thinking evolved. A precursor of the more sophisticated MR 500, the MR 6 was sturdy and tough, meaning it could blend foods that´other products couldn't handle. An important stepping stone on the way to perfecting the handheld blender.

In this way, we make sure they live up to our own expectations, and – more importantly – to those of the men and women who buy our products around the world. To guarantee the high levels of quality and precision, all the cutting elements in our shavers are manufactured at the Kronberg plant, located alongside our R&D experts. Bringing together balance, form and function in the tradition of Braun Design, the multi-award-winning LE speaker range was introduced in 2019.

His heritage has influenced countless modern designs, such as the Apple iPod (2) created by Jonathan Ives. And he established the 10 Principles of Good Design which have influenced following generations of industrial designers. Dieter Rams consistently implemented his design principles over the course of over three decades as the Braun design leader, and this was critical for Braun becoming an iconic global brand. Milestone products from him and his team are displayed at the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Centre de Pompidou (Paris) and the Museum of Applied Arts (Frankfurt). The exhibition “Less and More” showcasing his lifetime accomplishments was displayed in Osaka, Tokio, London, Frankfurt, Seoul and San Francisco and attracted over 370,000 visitors in 2009 –2012. Among the most important technical advances in consumer electronics during the 1960s was the development of new transistor technologies.
